Thread for games that you love to death despite low ratings or various flaws
Tell us what's wrong with the game and why you love it! Would you recommend it to anyone else? Cool vids of gameplay are good too. Super underrated or cult classic games you like are welcome as well.

I will try to start but this is a huge post so maybe someone will beat me to it ok so, Way of the Samurai 4It's a Samurai life simulator set during the 19th century as westerners started flowing into Japan. You play as one of the last samurai and decide whether power flows towards the failing shogunate, xenophobic warrior clans, or western traders. The game has multiple branching story paths and lets you choose the kind of person you want to be. Cool- Character Customization. Tons of clothing options ranging from kimono, hakama, to western style suits and clothing. There is a cowboy hat and on one playthrough I accidentally made my character look like Woody from Toy Story after trying to make him into a cowboy. Girl character models are available at a certain point (everyone will still refer to you as male though).
- SWORD FORGING. You can break swords apart into their three components of handle, blade guard, and blade and then reassemble them into a sword that visually represents what you like! I broke apart a claymore and put it on a katana handle because you can just do that.
- LOTS OF SIDEQUESTS. A lot of them are pretty funny or useful to you so they are worth doing.
- Run your own swordsmanship dojo, beat up people in the streets with the back of your sword to make them your disciple and they'll run around your dojo. I forget what they really do but it's an interesting side mechanic. You have to defend your dojo from challengers also.
- MULTIPLE SWORD FIGHTING STYLES. Swap between four different stances to suit your style. Using a style more gets you more moves and eventually you can....
- CREATE YOUR OWN SWORD FIGHTING STYLE. Basically this lets you min-max and choose the best moves from each style to do what you want.
- MULTIPLE STORY PATHS AND ENDINGS. I'm pretty sure it's 10 total, 6 or so should be faction related, 3 are non-affiliated, and 1 final route for the "true" ending.
- Story carries over from multiple playthroughs: Open the English School on one playthrough and it'll be open immediately on your next run. Kill the blacksmith and he will be missing the next run (but can be brought back). Characters from past playthroughs will roam the streets and will want to fight you.
Bad- Controls are really bad, controller or keyboard are equally janky. You are free to pick your poison. You get used to them eventually but you might have trouble adjusting to other games and back. You might be able to re-bind the controls for keyboard but be aware you have to somehow bind a d-pad, left analog stick, and right analog stick and you have to be able to use all of them sort of well.
- Graphics: This looks like a really budget ps3 title (because it was) so it's not the prettiest game. I think it looks fine.
- Difficulty curve: your first playthrough will go really badly simply because you don't have enough exp or good enough weapons to get through the really tough fights. The game will require multiple playthroughs to get a fast clear with carryover points to power you up on your next playthrough.
- Time investment: As far as I know you need to do all the routes to get the true ending unlocked. Not for people who want to do the best route first.
- Sword Forging grinding: For people who want to min-max all sword parts have attributes/skills on them. If you want to get the best combination for you be prepared to assemble and reassemble swords. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results, sword forging in Way of the Samurai borders on that.
- You can "romance" certain female characters on the streets and there's a minigame attached to that but it's bad. Really really bad. Contextually and gameplay wise it's bad. Don't do it. You can largely ignore it as nothing is directly related to it.
Weird- Doing crimes in town gets you arrested and you have to do weird BDSM themed minigames to get out.
- Westerners all got weird names like Jet Jenkins and Melinda Megamelons
Would I recommend it to people? - Yes. It's basically a poor man's Yakuza game set in an interesting time in history (although probably grossly inaccurate). The huge amount of customization in this game forgives a lot of the janky mechanics. I think that the largest barriers to entry in this game are the controls and the graphics, in that order. Committing to the control scheme of this game will let you play effectively and getting over the graphics will let you enjoy the game. This is one of my favorite "weird" titles out there and I've had a lot of fun and laughs with it.
